Custom Ecommerce Development
Tech Inject builds custom ecommerce platforms for brands whose catalogue, pricing or operations don't fit a template: bespoke storefronts on SvelteKit or Next.js, B2B and multi-region pricing, configurators, and direct integration with your ERP, warehouse and payment providers. You own the code and pay no platform or transaction fees.
Most stores should run on Shopify, and we build plenty of them. Custom ecommerce development is for the cases where a platform gets in the way: thousands of SKUs with attribute-driven pricing, quote-based B2B ordering, products that are configured rather than picked, marketplaces with multiple sellers, or a checkout that must talk to a legacy ERP in real time.
We build these storefronts as modern web applications — a SvelteKit or Next.js front end, a typed Node.js or Python API, PostgreSQL, and Stripe, Razorpay or your existing payment gateway. Search runs on Typesense or Algolia, media on a CDN, and every integration (ERP, WMS, 3PL, accounting, tax) is a first-class part of the design rather than an app bolted on later.
The trade-off is honest: a custom build costs more up front and takes longer than a Shopify theme, and you are responsible for hosting and maintenance (we offer both). In return you get exactly the workflow your business runs on, no monthly platform fee, no transaction cut, and a codebase your team or any other agency can keep developing.

How we work
Fixed scope. Weekly demos. No surprises.
-
Fit check (Week 1)
We map your catalogue, pricing rules and systems. If Shopify or Shopify Plus would serve you better, we say so and quote that instead.
-
Scope & fixed quote (Week 2)
Data model, integration contracts, page inventory and a fixed price with milestones.
-
Build in sprints (Weeks 3–12)
Weekly demos on a staging store with real products. Integrations are built against your actual ERP sandbox.
-
Migrate & launch
Catalogue, customers and order history migrated with checks, URL redirects mapped for SEO, phased cutover.
-
Run & improve
30-day warranty, then hosting, monitoring and a retainer for new features if you want one.
Right fit
Who this is built for.
- B2B distributors and manufacturers selling with customer-specific pricing and credit terms
- Brands with configurable or made-to-order products
- Retailers with large, attribute-heavy catalogues where filtering and search drive sales
- Businesses that must integrate checkout with an existing ERP or warehouse system in real time
- Companies paying significant platform fees and transaction cuts who want to own their stack
Honest comparison
Custom ecommerce vs Shopify: a neutral comparison
We build both, so we have no reason to push you either way. Here is how the two options compare on the things that decide the choice.
| Aspect | Custom ecommerce | Shopify / Shopify Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Unusual catalogues, B2B pricing, configurators, deep ERP coupling, marketplaces. | Most D2C and small B2B brands with a standard catalogue and checkout. |
| Up-front cost | Higher: from USD 5,000 for a focused build, typically USD 15,000–60,000+ for complex platforms. | Lower: a themed store from USD 5,000; Plus builds from USD 15,000. |
| Ongoing cost | Hosting (USD 50–500/month) plus an optional maintenance retainer. No platform fee, no transaction cut. | USD 39–399/month (Plus from USD 2,300/month), app subscriptions, and 0.5–2% transaction fees unless you use Shopify Payments. |
| Time to launch | 8–16 weeks depending on integrations. | 2–6 weeks for a themed store; 8–12 for Plus with custom work. |
| Flexibility | Anything you can specify. Pricing logic, workflows and checkout are yours to change. | Very flexible within the platform; checkout customisation needs Plus; some logic can only live in apps. |
| Integrations | Built directly against your ERP, WMS or 3PL. More work up front, no per-app fees. | Thousands of apps and connectors; complex ERP sync often needs a paid middleware or a custom app. |
| Maintenance & security | Your responsibility (or ours on a retainer): updates, backups, PCI scope if you handle cards. | Handled by Shopify: hosting, PCI compliance, uptime, updates. |
| Ownership & lock-in | You own the code, data and infrastructure; move hosts or agencies freely. | Data is exportable, but theme, apps and checkout live on Shopify; migrating off is a project. |
| SEO & performance | Fully in your control; server rendering and schema done the way you want. | Good out of the box; URL structure is fixed (/collections, /products) and some speed limits come from theme and apps. |
| Scale | Scales as far as your architecture and budget allow; you manage the capacity. | Handles flash-sale traffic without you thinking about it. |
Our take
If your catalogue, pricing and checkout fit Shopify's model, choose Shopify — it is cheaper to run, faster to launch and someone else keeps it secure. Choose a custom build when the platform would force you to bend your business around it, when platform and app fees have become significant, or when real-time integration with your own systems is the core of the operation. Unsure? Send us your catalogue and pricing rules and we will tell you which one we would build.

Sometimes. A custom store has no platform fee or transaction cut, so at high volumes or with many paid apps it can cost less over three to five years. At modest volumes Shopify is usually cheaper once you count hosting and maintenance. We model both for you before recommending either.
Focused builds start at USD 5,000. A full custom platform with B2B pricing, configurators and ERP integration typically lands between USD 15,000 and 60,000 depending on scope. You get a fixed quote after a one-week fit check.
Yes. We migrate products, customers and order history with integrity checks and map every old URL to a redirect so you keep your search rankings.
We deploy on Vercel or AWS in your own accounts and can run hosting, monitoring, backups and updates on a maintenance retainer. Card data stays with the payment provider (Stripe, Razorpay), which keeps PCI scope small.
Yes, and we do it often. We build Shopify and Shopify Plus stores too, so there is no incentive to steer you towards a custom build that you don't need.
You do. Source code, infrastructure, domains and analytics are set up in your name from day one, with documentation so any team can maintain it.
